I confess. I have a love affair with my
elliptical trainer. I use it four times a week, at least – and I feel like a
queen using it.
As I smoothly glide through the motions of using the elliptical
trainer, I calmly drink water once in a while to hydrate.
I can even read my
Kindle and finish half of a novel during my exercising. As technologically
challenged as I am, I can now touch my way through the high-tech screen that
the elliptical trainer has to monitor my stats like my heart rate.
I don’t even have to puff my way through the routine because using the elliptical training is like walking through air – the motions are that smooth and effortless.
So how did I start using an elliptical
trainer in the first place? It all began when I experienced my first heart
attack.
I’m a 65-year old man who feels pretty healthy for her age. One day
while I was tending to the garden of my granddaughter’s house where I was
staying that week, I felt inexplicably tired even though I woke up only a
couple of hours ago.
I sat down at an
outdoor bench and before I knew it, my granddaughter came out asking me what
was wrong. I thought that I was only sitting down on the bench, but apparently
I was already crouched from the pain shooting on my chest.
I was taken to the hospital, and that was when the doctor gave me the verdict: I might have survived my first heart attack – but my heart might not be able to take a second one anymore. Sure enough, the young doctor ordered me to get more exercise – and that’s when my love affair with my elliptical trainer all started.
I did a little bit of my own research and
discovered that there are a multitude of benefits brought about by an
elliptical trainer.
I see these contraptions in health clubs all the time, and the good news is that they work. You’d know that you are missing out on all the health benefits of such a nifty piece of equipment when you see just how effortlessly someone seems to glide while using the thing.
Unlike treadmills which practically damage your joints, using an elliptical trainer will allow you to create that smooth motion which will not put a stress to them. There’s a wide variety of elliptical trainers to choose from, starting from the most basic to the more high-tech models which I think I have.
One practical advice that I can give to
those who are thinking of buying elliptical trainers is that if you will be
using them everyday or up to four times a week like I do, buy accordingly.
Don’t be hooked into purchasing those $799 specials, use the thing everyday and
wonder why it broke down a month later.
Believe me, the investment of buying a
mid-range to high-end elliptical trainer model will be worth every cent. Not
only will you be able to increase the strength of your heart – but you will
also be able to stave off the chances of having another heart attack, like what
happened to me.
